Musings and Such

Just Around the Corner

This year has flown by for me, and maybe it has for you too. It’s already the beginning of November, the holidays are approaching, and the new year, 2020, is just around the corner. This time of year is a great time to do some taking stock, evaluating where we are in our lives. Maybe more importantly, where we want to be in our lives.

The new year is a new beginning. It’s an opportunity to imagine what we want to bring into our lives, using the positive power of creative possibility. This is a time to bring out those discarded dreams we had, to remember the exciting visions we used to think of. Did we want to start a new project? Did we see ourselves writng a book? Perhaps we’ve imagined a dream job that we’d love to go to every day. What would make our hearts sing? The possibilities are endless!

We’ve probably all had the experience of creating a goal in January, only to lose steam by February and have quit by March. It doesn’t have to be that way though. If we have clarity around what we’d like to have, do or be, we can get support in making it a reality. Friends can be a good resource. And, if we really want to make it a probability, we can get a coach to walk with us to completion.

Personally, I’m resurrecting a dream of going on a long bike ride. My goal is to ride to a distant town on the Katy Trail with a friend, have lunch and do some shopping, then ride back. I will use my coach to help me make progress on improving strength and endurance. I intend to do this ride when the weather is more consistently warm, probably May. My dream makes me excited, and it will feel good to accomplish it!

If you have something in mind to bring into reality in 2020, I invite you to contact me for a discovery session. We can see if working together makes sense, and if support would be the key to making your life one that makes your heart sing!

Free to Be

On this national holiday, Independence Day, we can check in to see if we’re ‘being’ our best selves or living our best lives. While we’re free in legal terms, we may be keeping ourselves in bondage by our thoughts and beliefs.

We’ve all seen pictures of elephants that are tethered by a rope attached to a peg in the ground. It’s obvious that the elephant is more that strong enough to free itself. It is the elephant’s belief that it is unable to escape that keeps it bound, not the rope.

We often bind ourselves with limiting thoughts that prevent us from doing or being what we want. Do we think we’re not well enough educated, too old, or any other ‘less than’ label we’ve self imposed? Have we let go of a dream or vision because we believed that it couldn’t happen? Do you want release that belief and be free?

I believe those things that are in our hearts that urge us to step out are the gifts and talents we have come here to be or do. By taking another look, checking to see if our reason for abandoning the dream was a self limiting thought, we take the first step back to freedom – freedom to live the best life we can.

On this Independence Day, we celebrate our freedom as United States citizens. We also celebrate our freedom to express our gifts, talents and skills, living our dreams!

A Bite at a Time

The old adage, ‘How do you eat an elephant? A bite at a time.’ is useful to remember when we are overwhelmed by some seemingly impossible task. Write that book? Learn to dance? Deliver a speech? Whatever comes to us as an opportunity that seems impossible may be just the thing that would make our heart sing!

I believe each of us has a ‘hero’s heart’ that intends and wants the best for us. What might come to us as an idea or vision might be that heart offering us an opportunity to expand and enrich our life. But, unfortunately, our monkey mind begins to discourage us, warning us of failure, disappointment, even danger. If we listen, we never try. If we ignore monkey mind, we might start out well, but then begin to experience anxiety about the goal or project. A mountain is looming before us!

What can help is to keep a vision, but create a focus of a task at a time, or ‘a bite at a time’. When we remember that every single project that has some meaning and complexity is made up of a series of tasks, the mountain might become more like a series of hills. And we can conquer a hill! Every step, every task, every hill brings that goal closer and closer, until one day, we can celebrate our accomplishment.
